The Lanark County Plowmen's Association hosts the
Biggest Little Plowing Match in Eastern Ontario.

The Lanark County Plowmen's Association was formed on December 9, 1986 after 50 years of absence from the County.  The first meeting was held at Beckwith Township Hall for all persons interested in forming a plowing club.  In spite of only 10 people being there, they were apparently very enthusiastic folk, for they elected a President and secretary, and planned to meet in January again, when they hoped with a larger crowd, a slate of directors could be selected.  Such was the case and the officers and directors for the inaugural association year were elected.

In the following 20 years, some of the names have changed, as is only to be expected, but the same early enthusiasm has carried on.

Our achievements for our first twenty years have been considerable.  We started 4-H Plowing Club in 1989, with the first year enrollment of six members.  The past couple of years it has grown to 18 or 19 young people enrolled in the club.  This is where the future of our organization lies, and where future membership will come from.  We present two burseries each year to a worthy candidate from Lanark County attending Kempville College.

In 1988 we started a Ladies Division at our matches, where crafts can be displayed and sold.  We also have demonstrations and displays on agricultural topics and from Women's Institutes, Health Units, 4-H Clubs and educational exhibits. We try to set up historical agricultural implements in action, such as old binders, threshing machines and small sawing operations.  These are very much enjoyed by both young and old.

Antique plowing is much enjoyed, both by participants and the general public.  Our match has grown from a one-day event to a two-day show, and the interest and enthusiasm is shown by a good attendance of visitors.

However, we do need new members especially younger members who can be called upon to lend a hand at the plowing match.  The years go by, and take their toll on energy, in some of our early workers.  However the first flame of enthusiasm is still burning as bright as ever.
